Car accidents are a fact of life, and even the best drivers can find themselves involved in a fender bender. It's important to know what to do when an accident occurs to make sure everyone is safe and to start the insurance claim process.
- Evaluate medical needs. If there are any injuries, call 911 immediately. Even a sore neck can be a sign of a more significant problem, so an evaluation by a paramedic is prudent.
- Move vehicles from the road as soon as possible. If they are drivable and you are not hurt, drive the cars onto the shoulder of the road or into a nearby parking lot to prevent traffic backup and possibly another accident.
- Try to get contact information for any witnesses to the accident before they leave the scene. It may be important for deciding who is at fault.
- Exchange information with the other driver. Important information includes name, phone number, address and license plate number. Also write down their insurance company and policy number.
- Take pictures of evidence. Even if all you have is a camera phone, take pictures of damage to the car, both interior and exterior. Include some pictures of the scene including mile markers, nearby landmarks, skid marks, broken glass and weather conditions. Take both close-ups and more wide-angle shots to make sure everything is documented.
- Get a report from a police officer. If you didn't call them immediately for medical needs, don't leave the scene until you have a written statement from law enforcement.
- Contact your insurance agent. Your agent will be able to walk you through the claims process and answer any questions you have about your coverage.
When dealing with the other party, try to keep calm and avoid blaming or admitting your own guilt. Let the police officer and insurance company work out those details, and never tell the other party anything about your policy limits. You may have great insurance, but broadcasting it will often lead to people trying to take advantage of an easy payout. Follow these procedures and your car can be fixed up and back on the road quickly.
